The grilling plate only fits in the base in one way. If the grilling plate is in the correct position, the safety lock is disabled and the thermostat unit fits fine.

Assemble correctly
Place the Philips grilling plate into the slots in the base.
Insert the thermostat unit socket in the side of the appliance.
